| Summer Opportunities Initiative |
In addition to school-year activities, Coaching for College offers students the opportunity to participate in a Summer Opportunities Initiative. The Summer Opportunities Initiative identifies, coordinates, and funds paid internships and other summer enrichment activities such as camps and classes for selected participants to further their academic and career interests. During the summer, Coaching for College meets weekly with participants to provide guidance and support in their new experiences.
Since 2007, 100% of the students were placed in internships or summer programs that matched their interest. In the past summers, funding was provided to allow students to attend a 4-week law program at Yale University and Princeton University. In addition, another student attended a 10-day leadership program at Fordham University in New York. The Childrens Medical Center Research Institute sponsored two students in summer internships as research assistants in the Working to Improve Maternal Mental Wellness Project. Other placements included Byte Back Computer Camp, Friendship Edison Robotic Camp, LAYC Upward Bound Program, and DCPS Summer Bridges.
