What is Coaching for College? Coaching for College is a volunteer program that partners with Shaw Middle School in Washington, DC to offer one-on-one tutoring and mentoring to Shaw on Saturday mornings. Our mission is to work with students to strengthen their academic skills and help them see education as a vehicle for realizing future opportunities.
How does it work? Coaching for College matches two mentors coaches with each student, so that coaches can switch off, divide responsibilities, etc. Coverage is key its up to the two of you to decide who will tutor your student each Saturday so no student is left disappointed. Between the two of you, every tutoring session should be covered. Students and coaches meet on Saturday mornings from 10 until 12 pm at Shaw Middle School. Coaches help kids with their day-to-day homework, school projects, standardized test preparation, and general organization and study skills. Coaching for College also plans fun trips and events (usually once per month) that range from university campus tours to Wizards games.
Who are the volunteers? Coaching for College volunteers are caring adults in the Washington, DC area who believebased on our own experiencesthat everyone needs help to succeed in school and to forge an exciting career.
Who are the kids? Coaching for College generally serves students between the ages of 12-16 in grades 6 through 12 from low-income households in Ward 2. Coaching for College students range from high achievers to kids who need extra help just to keep up with their grade level. They are committed to Coaching for College and they get themselves up every Saturday morning to head back to school for tutoring.
